Graeme Shaw, who has been a volunteer with the Glossop Mountain Rescue Team for 30 years, told us that he feels privileged to do this unusual job.  At a moment's notice, his pager could call him away to go to the aid of someone in distress.  As soon as there is a call-out, all the stresses and worries of daily life disappear and everything focusses on the 'rescue' and he has rescued more than a thousand people.  He speaks to the people he rescues and their friends or family who were with them, but he has never met anyone who thought they would need the Mountain Rescue Service.  Please see the attached file for the full report.

November Buxton Coffee Club

At the last Buxton Coffee Club of 2014, John Jones (known as JJ) gave an enthralling talk about his career in the Police.  He told us about when he was choosing what he wanted to do, and he drew up a list of possible careers, including lawyer, journalist, actor and of course the Police service.  He had gained a scholarship to RADA, but when he stuck a pin in the list of careers, it landed in the 'Police'.  He said that he had enjoyed every day of his 35 years and even though it is 19 years since he retired as a Detective Superintendent, he would go back tomorrow if he could.  He began in 1959 as a cadet in Birkenhead, where he served for 5 years before moving to London.

Glossopdale Coffee Club - November 2014

Jack Hanmer gave us a very entertaining talk, with musical accompaniment, about some of his favourite American composers.  He gave us a "potted" history of the USA, mentioning the Civil War, the Gold Rush, the abolition of slavery, the introduction of Income Tax, the Wright Brothers' first flight, the invention of the Morse Telegraph, the telephone and the electric phonograph which led to more people having access to music in their homes.
